Leeds Rhinos fans to score rewards for greener travel to games
Supporters travelling sustainably to AMT Headingley Rugby Stadium for matches from the 24th of April can earn prizes through a new partnership with West Yorkshire rewards app BetterPoints.
Leeds Rhinos and BetterPoints West Yorkshire have announced a new partnership that rewards supporters for making greener travel choices on matchdays and beyond.
The collaboration launches at AMT Headingley Stadium on Friday 24th April, when the Rhinos take on Catalans Dragons in the club's annual Green Round fixture, a match dedicated to sustainability both on and off the pitch. Kick-off is at 8pm.
BetterPoints is a free rewards app, funded as a pilot by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, that encourages people across Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield to walk, wheel, cycle and use public transport more.
Launched earlier this year across the region, users earn points for walking, wheeling, cycling and taking public transport. Points earned can be converted into vouchers for national brands, spent at local partners, or donated to charity.
From 24th April, Leeds Rhinos fans who download the app and record their sustainable journeys to home games will be entered into weekly prize draws, with an end-of-season draw offering the chance to win a hospitality package for two at AMT Headingley Stadium.
Chief Sustainable Transport Officer at BetterPoints, Jack Windle said: "We're delighted to be partnering with Leeds Rhinos, a club that takes its community and environmental responsibilities seriously.
"BetterPoints is all about making sustainable travel rewarding and fun, and what better way to demonstrate that than at the Green Round? Whether fans are walking to AMT Headingley, jumping on the bus from the city centre, or catching the train to Burley Park or Headingley station, every journey can count."
The partnership aligns with Leeds Rhinos' longstanding commitment to reducing the environmental impact of matchdays. The Green Round fixture has become an established event in the club's sustainability calendar, bringing together partners and fans around a shared vision for a greener game. Sue Ward, Chief Operating Officer, Leeds Rhinos said: "We're proud to welcome BetterPoints to our growing family of sustainability partners. The Green Round is a chance for everyone associated with Leeds Rhinos, players, staff and supporters, to think about the choices we make and the impact we can have. Partnering with BetterPoints gives our fans a genuine incentive to travel sustainably, and that's something we hope will make a real difference well beyond matchday."
The Green Round on 24th April will also feature a fan travel survey conducted in partnership with green energy supplierEcotricity, a kit and equipment recycling initiative with environmental education organisation KEEP, and a presence from Leeds City Council's Travel Behaviour Change Team including their mascot Arlo the Owl.
Leeds City Council is a key delivery partner for BetterPoints West Yorkshire, supporting the programme's mission to shift travel habits across the region and contribute to West Yorkshire's ambitions around air quality, active travel and Vision Zero. A Leeds City Council spokesperson, "Our Vision Zero ambition is for no one to be killed or seriously injured on Leeds roads by 2040, and to achieve this, means we need to make it easier, safer and more appealing for people to choose sustainable ways to travel.
“We’re investing in improvements to key routes across the city, including recent changes along the A660 corridor into Headingley, to support safer walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport. But infrastructure alone isn’t enough, we also need to support people to change habits.
“BetterPoints does exactly that by rewarding everyday journeys, and when it’s linked to something people are passionate about like supporting Leeds Rhinos, it becomes a powerful tool for positive behaviour change. We’re proud to support this partnership and to work alongside the club to help fans travel more sustainably and safely on matchdays and beyond.”
To get started, all fans need to do is download the BetterPoints app free of charge from the Apple Store or Google Play. Once registered, users in West Yorkshire are automatically enrolled in the programme and can begin earning points straight away.
Any fan who downloads the app and travels to one or more remaining Leeds Rhinos 2026 home games at AMT Headingley Stadium on foot, by walking, wheeling, cycling or by public transport will be entered into the prize draw. Fans who travel sustainably to more games will earn more entries, increasing their chances of winning the grand prize.
Users can earn points that can be redeemed for high street vouchers or donate them to local and national charities, including the Leeds Rhinos Foundation, it’s official charity.
More details of the Leeds Rhinos BetterPoints partnership will be shared via the club's channels ahead of the Green Round fixture.
