After 27 gruelling rounds of action, Leeds Rhinos are back in the Betfred Super League Play-Offs this Friday night as they welcome Warrington Wolves to AMT Headingley, kick off 8pm.

Playing host to the Wolves, who defeated Hull KR in their eliminator to take a step closer to Old Trafford, Brad Arthur's side hopes to dispel last year's Play-Off drama as they take on a side they have beaten twice already in the league during the season. Sam Burgess' Wire side on the other hand are full of confidence after winning eight of their last nine matches.

After ending an eight-year wait to host Play-Off Rugby League last year when the eliminators pitted Leeds against St Helens, AMT Headingley plays host once again to the exciting final stages of the Betfred Super League season - this time at the semi-final stage.

From 1998 to 2022, the club was a regular name amongst the sides looking to complete the road to Old Trafford, as they only missed the post-season play-offs three times during those 25 years. Out of those 49 matches (excluding Grand Finals) against 12 different opponents, Leeds have come away victorious on 27 occasions as they've progressed to the Grand Final stage eleven times. The Rhinos struggled to find form during the early years of the Super League Play-Offs as they only won four out of nine games between 1997 and 2000. After falling short of lifting the inaugural Grand Final trophy in 1998 at the hands of Wigan, Leeds bounced back in 1999 to finish third, only for Graham Murray's side to lose out to both St Helens and Castleford Tigers, before suffering defeat to Bradford to miss the 2000 Grand Final.

2004 proved to be the catalyst for Leeds' success in the post-season as the club won 13 out of 17 play-off matches between Grand Final wins in 2004 and 2012. Bouncing back from a loss at home to Bradford, the Rhinos beat Wigan to win their first Super League title, and also secured back-to-back Play Off wins for the first time when they beat St Helens 19-16 at Knowsley Road to progress to the 2005 final. Two other notable spells of success also came between 2008 and 2009 when the club went undefeated in the Play-Offs on their way to two Grand Final appearances, as well as a six-match unbeaten spell in 2011 and 2012 when the club booked their Old Trafford place twice from fifth place in the table.

More recent Play-Off matches have seen the club head on the road. Starting in 2020, Warrington hosted the behind-closed-doors matchup between Leeds and Catalans that saw the Dragons win 26-14, before 2021 saw the Rhinos beat Wigan in a tight 8-0 result at The Brick Community Stadium and lose out to eventual Champions St Helens 36-8 during the 2021 campaign. 2022's Play-Offs were also spent away from AMT Headingley, as the Rhinos knocked out Catalans and Wigan on the road to an Old Trafford appearance before meeting the Saints juggernaut once again. The Red Vee continued their form against Leeds last year in a dramatic 16-14 final score, with Shane Wright scoring the match-winner on the full-time whistle to progress Saints into the semi-finals.

Out of a total of 14 semi-final appearances across the different play-off permutations, the majority of Rhinos semi-finals have been played on home soil.

In addition to games between 2015 and 2025 that saw the competition adopt the semi-final stage in name, AMT Headingley has hosted seven previous eliminator games between 1998 and 2010 where the home side have been 80 minutes away from featuring in the Grand Final. The first occasion where Leeds hosted a Super League semi-final was in 1998 when they put St Helens to the sword 44-16 on the way to featuring at Old Trafford for the first time. Five years later, the Rhinos welcomed Wigan for back-to-back trips in 2003 and 2004 to decide who progressed to the season finale - each side taking away a win as Tony Smith's Rhinos went on to win their first Grand Final title in 2004. 

Home semi-final wins and Grand Final triumphs became a trend when the club completed its three-in-a-row achievement in the late noughties. The Warriors continued to test themselves against the side in Blue and Amber, cheered on by the South Stand, but remained winless. Brent Webb and Rob Burrow's two-try performances got the better of the Cherry and Whites in 2007, but a closer encounter a year later needed Leeds to hang on in a 18-14 final score. 2009 also wasn't straightforward as the club welcomed Catalans Dragons in order to book their final place, but tries from Scott Donald and two apiece from Ryan Hall and Danny McGuire were enough for the home side to begin dreaming of a third consecutive title.

A five-year break from hosting a semi-final was ended in 2015 when the Treble was kept alive against St Helens. Zak Hardaker and Hall's tries had been enough to keep the Rhinos ahead against a Saints side who matched Leeds blow for blow, but a frantic last play from the away side was pounced on by Kallum Watkins to end the contest in the closing stages. The same tension was felt against Hull FC in 2017, only this time it was Liam Sutcliffe scoring the try to steer Leeds over the line and lift another Grand Final trophy a week later.

Away from home, Leeds have played five semi-finals as the visiting side, including one against Friday's opponents. 2011's win over the Wolves was the first of three consecutive away semis that saw Leeds beat Wigan in 2012 before losing to the eventual champions a year later. Recent clashes saw the Rhinos get one over the Cherry and Whites in their last semi-final outing in 2022, after losing heavily to St Helens in 2021.

Focusing on the Rhinos' matchups against Friday's opponents, Warrington, the clubs have only met three times in total in the postseason during the Super League era.

First clashing in 2006 at the home of the Rhinos, a closely fought affair saw neither side give the other an edge until the final moments, when Lee Briers struck a 40-metre drop goal to steal an 18-17 final score. Even though the Rhinos worked hard to claim the win themselves as Kevin Sinfield edged the home side ahead before Briers' first drop goal reply, Leeds had a late chance to win when Jamie Thackray counter-attacked but couldn't take in the bouncing ball to set up the Wolves' winner.

Five years later, more drama followed the Wolves and Rhinos in the 2011 semi-finals. Leeds hadn't beaten Warrington in both meetings that season, but produced their best performance when tries from Carl Ablett, Rob Burrow and two from Ryan Hall kept the visitors to the Halliwell Jones Stadium in a close contest.
