Ken was in Hunslet’s 1959 Championship Final teams whilst only 18, and had represented Great Britain and appeared at Wembley by the time he joined Leeds in September 1966. A series of arm injuries failed to subdue the hard grafting Eyre, and he went on to gain all the domestic honours available in a fine Leeds career. In total, 121 appearances brought ten tries plus two Yorkshire caps to go with his Test appearance against New Zealand in 1965.
He was joined at Leeds for the 1966-67 season by his brother Albert, who signed from Keighley, and the pair would play alongside each other at Wembley in the Watersplash Final the following season.
In 1968, he helped end a decade absence for the Yorkshire Cup at Headingley as part of the side that defeated Castleford at Wakefield in the final. That would prove to be just a taster though for Leeds fans as they finished the year with the club’s second Championship success.
Very fast for a big man, he became a key member of the glorious Leeds team of the late 1960s. He left Leeds in September 1970 to join Keighley. In September 2018, he passed away, aged 76.
