Debut: Vs Hull FC (A) 28/04/2024
Honours:
Full back Riley Lumb came all the way through the Leeds Rhinos Academy to make his debut for the club during the 2024 season.
Known for his speed, agility and try scoring coming through the Rhinos Academy system, it was no surprise that Lumb made a quick start to life in the first team as he scored two tries in a 18-12 win over Hull FC early in the season. The winger was unlucky to suffer an injury against London in the next game, but returned at the end of the season to feature against Wigan and Hull KR.
As one of the players to held Leeds win the Under-18s Grand Final in 2022, he honed his skills in the club's Academy and Reserves before being given his Super League debut in round ten against Hull FC. He instantly impressed in a man of the match performance as he scored two tries to help the Rhinos to victory.
Lumb was first inspired to start playing rugby thanks to his dad, Gary, who previously played for Great Britain’s BARLA squad.
Starting at Townsville Tigers when he was six before moving to Castleford Lock Lane, Riley has featured in four BARLA finals, winning two with Lock Lane. He has also competed in the National Schools Finals at Wembley in 2017, 2018 and 2019 with his former school, Castleford Academy.
After not playing a game in 2020 for the Rhinos' scholarship due to Covid, he made a big impact for both of Mark Butterill's Under-16s and Under-17s teams. He played all four games for the Under-16s and scored five tries, notably touching down for two tries against both London Broncos and Bradford Bulls.
He also ran out twice for the Under-17s against London and Wigan, scoring in both games, and at the end of the season, Lumb was one of seven new players that signed for the club’s academy.
2022 was another breakout year for the youngster as he earned a first-team contract. He was one of the Under-18s' top try scorers with seven tries and nine goals in 12 games, plus he was a crucial part of Leeds' Academy side that lifted the Grand Final title at the end of the season. He was rewarded with Yorkshire Academy honours too, plus he made a sole Reserves appearance in a home win over Huddersfield.
For 2023, he split his playing time across the Rhinos Reserves and Academy teams, making nine appearances and scoring eight tries in each competition.
2024 saw him score twice in five games for the Reserves, and he also made a sole appearance on dual registration for Halifax Panthers, before making his first team debut in April.
